Last night I watched a TRULY awful Apple Plus movie called Spirited, starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, just to justify my 3-month free Apple TV plus subscription before that stinker made me rage-quit the service. When I saw at the end that it was made by “Apple Studios,” I thought to myself, “Oh, so they think that just because they make complicated hardware like iPhones, iPads and Macs, that they have the moviemaking chops to save Will Ferrell’s career?”

The reason I bring this up is because tech bros seem to greatly misunderstand that great art that resonates with audiences is a lot more than technical prowess of the fundamentals and eventually figuring out how to get the hands right. Yes, people are impressed with the technology now and it is undeniably already costing jobs in ALL industries, but considering how people are already ignoring generic and boring CGi movies like Pixar’s Lightyear in favor of deliberately imperfect movies like Del Toro’s Pinocchio, it’s reasonable to imagine that people will burn out of pretty-but-uninteresting AI-generated movies faster, especially in a future where AI poops out “meh” movies far faster than human hack writers already do. At least with 3DCG animation and Flash/Toon Boom rigs can be used in artistic ways in the hands of truly talented people—you can’t say that about a “make art” button.
